Ongoing Hiatus

I am taking the time to say that I am still taking the time. That is, the time off. This will likely last until after Easter 2012, for certain throughout Lent.

Projects are ongoing. Time is precious. Momentous things are afoot in the world. For the most part I can do much better than simply to spend my time writing about them.

That is it for now.

UPDATE

Once again, I find myself apologizing to anyone (very few) who had checked in here once in awhile.  The last post here is from January of this year and here we are in September.

There is nothing so irritating, to some at least, as someone who will not update his  blog.  I have a world of excuses but I am here to point out that time is the biggest factor in all of this.  In light of that I have reluctantly realized that I might well have to re-think the point and purpose of this blog and maybe even its existence.

I am sure that most who have seen or read from it have moved on by now.  Likely I am talking mostly to myself here, which is fine.  I just want to put it on the record that if this morphs into something else in the near future it is a result of assessing what I am realistically able to do.

Frankly, I bit off more than I could chew.  Running several blogs and a website was too much and lately even what I trimmed down to has been neglected.  So, I am re-thinking the whole project with a view to simplicity and ease of execution, as well as purpose and goal.

That’s it for now.

Keep the smokers around for awhile yet.

Here’s a story from the Winnipeg Free Press from the other day. CBC news had the story as well.

It seems that the ban on smoking on school property was ignored to provide a shelter for the student smokers in order to keep them from littering and loitering on or near other private property in the neighbourhood.

When I heard the story the other day on the radio my first thought was that perhaps folks at Steinbach Regional Secondary School of Steinbach, Manitoba had joined the ranks of the enlightened. Continue reading

Jared Lee (non-sequitur) Loughner; This one ain’t political…

From Apocalypse Now:

Colonel Kurtz – Are my methods unsound?

Captain Willard – I don’t see any method at all sir.

Here’s the U-tube channel for Jared Lee Loughner. Watch them all, then take a Tylenol.

Tell me how this is politically to the left or right.

This young man is a violent version of what I have seen and heard in bars or on street corners. Young men with blurred thinking, unable to make logical connections but totally unaware of that fact, indeed thinking that their powers of reason are enhanced in their current state of mind.

But those guys have the excuse of being either drunk or stoned. Later, they realize that they have been talking nonsense. It seems that Loughner lived his whole life in this non sequitur world.

This one has been around awhile but…

Mahatma Gandhi, as you know, walked barefoot most of the time,
which produced an impressive set of calluses on his feet. He also ate very little, which made him rather frail and with his odd diet, he suffered from bad breath. This made him

A super calloused fragile mystic hexed by halitosis.

Heroic Materialism

After posting my Christmas Eve Thoughts, I happened across this video from Father Barron, and it explains a lot about what I have been feeling lately about our culture;

Christmas Eve Thoughts 2010

Radio Addiction

In the course of my work I have occasion to listen to radio for many hours if I so choose. I remember a few years ago, as a personal discipline, shutting off the radio for a period of a couple of months to try to clear my head and re-orient myself.

At that time I remember that it was a real withdrawal for me. I had become quite attached, one might say addicted to talk radio, political talk radio in particular but also including some discussions of social issues. And there was also, once I obtained a satellite radio, the talk and other programming on Catholic radio.

Radio and Health

Over the course of this past year, since losing a kidney in 2009 I have discovered that overall weariness and overall health have become a much bigger issue for me. This fall, in fact, I was hit with a flu the like I haven’t seen for years and following that a case of pneumonia. Continue reading

Touch Down and Go

This is just a note for people that do not like bloggers that do not update their blog regularly. My apologies.

I have been engaged in a couple of projects that outside of my regular work and a recent illness have taken up all of my time.

It is unlikely that I will be able to post much, if at all until after the new year.

I have also been turning an idea over in my head for a re-vamp of the Whippleshire project, as it is also stagnating as it is. Whippleshireblog and North of the Shire will likely stay as they are.

Welcome to Toronto, world-class city

YouTube Preview Image
It’s interesting that one of the Toronto media’s exercises in the waning hours of the G20 is to check the coverage of the rest of the world’s media.

How do they see us? What do they think of us? Do they think of us?
It’s funny and sad at the same time. Don’t worry Toronto, if there was any doubt before, you can now call yourself a world-class city.

It is also interesting to hear and see the coverage of the G20 protests and riots. There is one thing that puzzles me. Whatever do those people think they will accomplish, whether they are socialists, communists, anarchists, globalists, anti-globalists, greenies, or any other of the various and sundry special interests that regularly populate these things? Are they naive enough to think they might affect policy? Continue reading

It’s been over a month…

…since we have posted here. My apologies to anyone who may check in once and awhile.

Most of my posts have been at North of the Shire lately.

There is something that we have been watching closely. That is the political landscape of the United States. Today I heard the Glen Beck show on Fox over the satellite. Occasionally I think Glen Beck has been meandering around in the dark a bit, searching for answers rather than providing them. And, in some sense that is the charm of his show that he doesn’t pretend to have all the answers all of the time. Continue reading
